Why repeating really works
Repeating feels silly. Until you see why it works.
Adults hate repeating. We feel like parrots. Children never feel that way. They say the same word a hundred times, in the kitchen, in the car, in the garden, and one day they simply have it. Almost everything people can do, they learned by repeating it many times in many situations. Animals too. "Repetition is the mother of skill" is true for languages as well.
- Heard only once
- Repeated in real situations
Illustration of the method — not a measurement, and not student results.
But your head has to understand what it repeats.
A sentence you repeat without understanding stays abstract, like a phone number in a language you don't speak. Memory research has shown for a long time that what we understand and give meaning to stays with us much longer than what we only repeat.
Think of the word "orange".
You probably see the fruit. Or the colour. Maybe the logo of a brand you know. You don't see the letters. For most people, the mind works with pictures, sounds and feelings, and a word with a picture behind it is remembered better than a word alone. Letters are only symbols for sounds, and writing is just a few thousand years old. Speaking is much older, and children learn it long before they read.
What you do in this course
In every lesson, everything is explained and translated at the moment it appears. That is my part. Yours starts right then: when you hear the translation, picture it. Where are you? Who are you talking to? What do you feel? Do the same with the next word, and the next. After a while the new sounds attach themselves to your pictures.
Then take it out into your life.
Use each new word or sentence as soon and as often as you can. Every new situation adds another picture to the same word. The more pictures a word has, the more ways your brain has to find it, and the faster the right words come when you need them.
Slip some Luxembourgish into your French or English.
Only know a few words? That's already enough. Drop them into your French or English sentences: a "Moien" when you walk into the bakery, an "Äddi" when you leave, a Luxembourgish word in the middle of a sentence. Every word you know is worth using straight away. You won't look silly. You're simply using the language. Luxembourgers love it, they appreciate the effort, and it's fun to do.
Repeat, but with pictures. That's the whole method.

You speak, but people don't always understand you?
It's frustrating. Often the words are right, and it's the sounds that don't come through. With my Pronunciation Course, you get understood more easily, from your very first sentences.
You can start it as soon as you've finished the first 8 to 10 lessons of Niveau 1. It will make your life much easier. It is also open to everyone, even without taking my other courses.
